The holidays are almost upon us, and if you are renting a cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, there are a few things to keep in mind. With a bit of planning, your restful vacation in that idyllic cabin can be less stressful and more enjoyable.

Reservations
Make sure to book your reservations well in advance. The time around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years can bring lots of visitors to the area; you will want to be sure to have your favorite cabin reserved.

Check In – Check Out
Find out, in advance, the times for check in and check out during the holidays; certain times may be required on the day of a holiday. Because employees and cabin personnel want to spend time with their family, it is wise to check on this ahead of your arrival.

What’s Happening During the Holidays
At the time of renting the cabin, you might consider what attractions your family will want to visit. Do you want to be near the Newfound Gap Car Snowmen and Icicle Viewing that happens in winter? Or if visiting in October, you might be sharing the fun of Dollywood’s Harvest Festival & Gospel Celebration or Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg.

Be sure to check with any of your favorite restaurants to make sure they are open and serving during the holiday time. If spending Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years with family at one of the great popular restaurants in the area, be sure to make a reservation. Additionally, you’ll want to check with your favorite winery or brewery ahead of time to be sure that they are open. Events and wine tastings might be happening, and you’ll be pleased to know about them.

What to Bring
Skiers may want to bring their own skis or snowboard if going in the winter time. You might be visiting Ober Gatlinburg Ski Area or the Cataloochee Ski Area. Be sure to pack warm clothes and your favorite ski accessories. Additionally, cross-country skiing is popular during the winter at Clingmans Dome Road. You might find out if your cabin or porch has room for play equipment if bringing it with you.

You will want to pack a camera or keep your cell phone camera charged. Holidays bring numerous opportunities for fabulous picture-taking. As a time when families gather together, you will want to record all the exciting moments and memories.

Will you be fishing or golfing? Find out the schedule of the shop, if renting tackle or equipment. If bringing your own, be sure to pack it.

Relax and Enjoy
With a bit of preparation, renting a cabin in the Great Smokies can add to the season’s cheer and ensure that your family has a memorable holiday experience.
